Did you know that tobacco is the leading cause of PREVENTABLE death in our country killing more people than alcohol use, illegal drug use, AIDS, motor vehicle injuries, suicides and murders COMBINED! While it is true that cigarette smoking rates have declined in our country, other forms of tobacco are gaining popularity, particularly among our youth.
“I am confident this ordinance is a good thing for our town. While families have a role, anything the tobacco retailers can do to prevent youth access to tobacco is a good thing.”
-Eric Dorris- Steamboat Springs Tobacco Retailer; Owner, Space Station, a gas and convenience store
The N-CTRL Ordinance which passed in July 2011 will
- help our community know who is selling tobacco and where.
- fund proper enforcement to prevent illegal tobacco sales to youth
- help to prevent youth from using tobacco, save lives and reduce health care costs.
Why a License to sell Tobacco Products?
- 6 out of 10 Colorado High School students attempting to purchase cigarettes were successful. (2008 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey)
- 90% of smokers began at or before the age of 18.(2007 National Household Survey, SAMSHA)
- 92,000 of Colorado’s youth under the age of 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. (2010 Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids)
- Youth who perceived cigs as relatively easy to get were more likely to become regular smokers (Annals of Family Medicine 2008)
- Strong retailer enforcement reduced sales to minors (Preventive Medicine, 2007)
- Local tobacco retailer licensing ordinances with strong enforcement provisions are effective. Rates of illegal tobacco sales to minors decrease. (2011,American Lung Association in California)
- Illegal tobacco sales by retailers contribute to the lifelong addiction of many youth to tobacco (2008, American Lung Association in California).
